“BRIDGING THE GAP: CLIL FOR EFL”
DESCRIPTION
The term CLIL emerged more than 20 years ago as a methodological approach trend in the field of bilingual education. The aim of this workshop is to show how to apply the principles of this approach in the classroom by combining theoretical and practical aspects, and the way these same principles can be used to teach English as a foreign language making a significant contribution to raising the standards of foreign language proficiency.

18:30 COFFEE BREAK

19:00-20:30 CHRISTOPHER FOREMAN. “LINGUISTIC MEDIATION IN SECONDARY (AND UPWARDS)”
DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the CEFR, linguistic mediation is a skill made up of other skills, it’s; reading, listening, writing and speaking all mixed together, but with an added, human element. With linguistic mediation we are putting effective communication at the centre, it is all encompassing and it’s exactly what we’ve been missing in language learning. Mediation was first adopted in Spain in the EOIs just a few years ago, and now, with new education laws potentially coming into effect this year, there is the distinct possibility that this new skill will be a part of our ELT classrooms at all levels. Join us to learn how mediation might just be the most meaningful teaching trend of 2022!

BIODATA
Christopher has been involved in English language teaching and teacher training for over 10 years, and has worked as a consultant for Edebé/Express Publishing since 2016. He has developed a keen sense of what teachers AND students really need in their day to day, and he sees motivation as the key factor which separates success from failure.

17:00-18:30- MICHAEL BRAND. “LOMLOE: DEVELOPING SELF-MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES IN OUR SECONDARY STUDENTS”
DESCRIPTION
Teachers everywhere are interested in their students becoming more independent and taking ownership for their own learning. Many of the descriptors in the new Education Law, the LOMLOE, speak to these self management strategies: being able to plan and set goals. Being organised. Monitoring progress and being reflective about what worked and what didn’t; learning to learn. In this session we’ll look at ways we can help our students develop their self management strategies.

DESCRIPTION
Our bookmarks are always full of websites we add day after day to help us in our job as teachers but sometimes we cannot find exactly what we need and we do not have enough time to dedicate to creating resources. But is it so difficult? Nowadays there are many resources we can use to help us create materials, manage the class, revise the topics, introduce new ones and much more. We don’t need to be graphic designer or to have particular skills, we only need a huge amount of imagination. This workshop is aimed at showing some useful websites, extensions, apps, and tools to create resources specially tailored for our classes, our students and even our books. We are going to discover some incredible and inspiring IG accounts which can help us discover educators from all over the world who devote their time and effort to the world of education and EFL/ESL teaching.

TUESDAY 27th   Facultad de Gª e Hª UCM

 17:00 -18:15   ANGELA HILL

“FLIGHTS OF FANCY? CREATIVE ENGLISH INSPIRED BY BIRDS”

DESCRIPTION
My mother enrolled me in the Young Ornithologist Club (YOC) when I was a child and forced me to go bird watching with her at a local wildlife reserve. Living in England, this meant sitting in the cold and damp even in the middle of summer. Needless to say, I hated every minute of it!  Now I’m older, I can appreciate the positive mental health aspects of sitting quietly in the middle of nature, just watching and listening to birds doing what they do. According to my teenage daughter, what birds do is very little, but bit by bit, I’ve indoctrinated her enough so that she frequently embarrasses herself in front of her friends by pointing out the birds that they pass.
The Earth is in crisis and we need more people to start to appreciate the nature on their doorsteps. Young people who live in cities don’t have to sit out in nature reserves for hours on end, all they have to do is look out their windows and they should see at least a couple of sparrows.
In this participative workshop we’ll work together to find ways to increase our students’ awareness of the avian life around them and see how birds have inspired and helped us throughout the ages.     Drawing from different sources, we’ll come up with a variety of bird-based activities to get students interacting creatively in English.

BIODATA
I have been a TEFL teacher for 22 years, most of that time here in Madrid but I spent a couple of years in Mexico City as well.  Until recently, I worked at International House (IH), a private language academy, giving classes to adults and young learners. I also coordinated International House’s extra curricula English classes at a number of schools around Madrid and was a trainer on the IH Madrid Young Learners course, helping teachers plan effective and engaging classes.
Before teaching, I worked at The Natural History Museum in London on the museum’s membership scheme, where I was lucky enough to be able to accompany groups on behind the scenes tours to meet scientists and see some of the collections not normally on display.
